What I help with

Family Transitions therapy for changing homes and routines

I work with families when home life is shifting and everyone is trying to find a new rhythm. We slow things down and look at how the change is affecting each person.

What people bring me

Family transitions can include separation, divorce, remarriage, a new living situation, or other shifts that change the feel of home. Children may act out, pull away, or become more anxious when the structure around them changes. Teens may act like nothing matters while feeling overwhelmed underneath. Parents often feel stuck between managing the transition and keeping everyday life steady.

  • My child is acting different since things changed at home.
  • We keep arguing over the same things.
  • I don’t know how to talk to my kids about this.
  • Everyone in the house feels out of sync.

I pay attention to how a change lands in the whole family, not just on one child.

How I work with it

I work with family transitions by listening to the family as a system, not just to one person in isolation. Sometimes that means meeting with a child or teen, and sometimes it means including parents or the whole family when that fits the concern. I pay close attention to communication, roles, and the way stress moves through the home. The work is practical and relational, because a transition affects both feelings and routines.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)
IFS can help family members notice the parts of themselves that react fast, withdraw, or try to control everything during change. That can open up a steadier conversation about what everyone needs.
Play Therapy
For younger children, play can show how they experience the change at home. I use that to help adults understand what the child may not know how to say.
Trauma-Informed Care
Big changes can feel destabilizing, especially when there’s already stress in the background. I keep the work grounded and pay attention to what feels too much at once.

What the first sessions look like

The first sessions focus on what changed, how each person is responding, and what feels most stressful right now. We decide together who should be included and what needs attention first.

Questions people ask

Can you work with family support when parents are separating?

Yes, that’s one of the kinds of family transitions I see. We’d look at what the children are experiencing and what support the family needs around the change.

Do you see the whole family or just the child?

It depends on the concern and what would be most useful. Sometimes I meet with the child or teen, and sometimes I include parents or the family together.

My child is acting out since our home changed. Is that something you help with?

Yes, changes at home often show up in behavior. I’d want to understand what the change has felt like for them and what the behavior may be communicating.

How do you talk about hard changes without making things worse?

Carefully and with attention to each person’s role in the family. I keep the conversation grounded in what’s happening now and what each person can handle.
